What is Data Mining ?

Data mining, also known as scraping, (aka a scraper site) is the black hat SEO practice of making webpages, or even complete websites out of information already on the Internet.

It can be said that Google itself is the biggest scraper site of them all !

The majority of scraper sites list snippets or listings of other websites to make it look like unique content, and in most cases the outcome is a huge directory of scraped content. Because of the multitude of possible search strings and keyword matches available then this kind of website can bring in huge amounts of search engine traffic.

Data can be scraped from just about any search engine. The data is then usually cleaned up, eg URLS, and website names deleted. The black hat SEO webmaster would already have his list of keywords and keyword phrases that he wants to make optimized pages for by using a keyword tool, so he would then just input these keywords or keyword phrases into a search engine. He will then use those search engine results as content for the corresponding page.

There are many types of software available that can automate building websites in this way and many novice black hat SEO webmasters, probably have purchased some software to do most of the work for them. The software sellers usually fill their pages with false promises of easy traffic and entice them with thoughts of building huge websites in minutes.

However after spending a few hundred dollars on the software and setting up the website and then spending a few days promoting the website, they still have no success at all. This is because of evolving search engine algorithms. Within just a few days they notice that their black hat SEO website has been banned or de-indexed by search engines for breaking their guidelines.

This kind of practice is fast becoming outdated and no longer a viable technique to draw in traffic from SERPS to make money. Scraper sites and building sites using data mining is officially dead !
