What is Negative SEO ?

Negative SEO is a black hat SEO technique used to attack a website giving the target website negative SEO, and thereby having it penalized in SERPS or having the target website banned or de-indexed by search engines.

There are a number of ways that a competitor can give a website negative SEO.

The Black Hat SEO eBook outlines many ways that a black hat SEO webmaster can give negative SEO to a competitors website - however I do not condone or approve partaking in this kind of practice - I merely expose it in the hope that it can one day be addressed by the search engines.

This technique is also known as googlebowling, linksbowling or googlebombing.

It can be implemented by attacking a competitors website and leaving footprints towards the target website, however the success rate of giving a competitor negative SEO largely depends on the strength and importance of the target website.

For larger websites that are competing with yours for certain keyword phrases then you can easily affect the target websites position in SERPS for those keyword phrases, for smaller websites then you can easily have them barred from search engines or de-indexed within just a few weeks.

There are also a variety of other ways a competitors website can be attacked, slowed down or crashed or have pages de-indexed or even hijacked using pagerank hijacking and redirects. You can even spy on a competitors website and research into their SEO techniques, and if you can discover any breach of search engine regulations then you can bring it to the attention of the search engines and have them banned or penalized.
