SEO

What is SEO ?

SEO is an acronym for "Search Engine Optimization".
In brief SEO means optimizing a web page to reach its maximum potential in search engines.

On-site SEO

The basics of on-site SEO involve ensuring the words you want surfers to input into search engines in order to find that particular webpage are displayed on the page regularly, ensuring you have your meta tags and keywords defined and that you have all images tagged. Also ensuring that each page is in your site map and is easily accessible from your homepage so that the link to that page can be spidered from search engines, thereby allowing them to include all the websites pages in SERPS and by ensuring each webpage displays unique content only.

Off-site SEO

Off-site, SEO means promoting a website in order for it to appear higher in SERPS. This means getting other websites to link to the website by means of voting for it, in the way of providing a link pointing to the site. This entails finding other websites who may want to list your website as a valuable resource to its surfers, thereby gaining your website a vote in the eyes of the search engines - giving your website some importance (link popularity) and thereby raising it in SERPS.

The more votes (links) your website has from other websites then the more important your website is deemed to be in the eyes of the search engines.

The actual hyperlink text also has importance as it will be matched with the surfers keyword search, so if you want that page to appear high in SERPS for a particular keyword or keyword phrase then other websites linking to that page using that particular keyword or phrase within the anchor text will give your website more priority in SERPS for that keyword or phrase.

Webmasters can promote their website by means of "trading" links with other websites, however current search engine algorithms now take this into account and less importance is placed upon this type of link when websites are seen as scratching each others backs in order to manipulate SERPS.

White hat SEO webmasters have to trawl the Internet for months on end looking for other websites that may want to trade links just in order to get a little exposure, or they may find related sites and hope that their website may provide some added value to their surfers and that the site may give some free publicity, however this may mean having some free software or games or great, important or unique content or information relevant to that sites surfers.

However, when using black hat SEO there are a number of ways in which you can manipulate getting links to your website, this includes undetectable ways of cheating on reciprocal links and finding vulnerable places on the net where you can instantly post links. However, there are a number of other factors that need to be taken into consideration also. In the past black hat SEO webmasters would post their links just about anywhere possible. However, this kind of practice can draw attention to a website for a number or reasons, but the elite black hat webmaster knows exactly which pages he should and should not post his links on, and exactly how he should post his link so that it is not considered as spam and that is it guaranteed to be considered a genuine vote for the site.

These black hat SEO techniques are fully detailed in the Black Hat SEO eBook.
